You told me that you'd feed my hungry heart
And darlin' I believed you at the start
But it ain't worked out quite that way at all
Cuz the food was bad
And the portions were small
I loved you, yes I did and that's no lie
I praised you to the earth and to the sky
I gave you all I had until you had me on my knees
      Check, please!

You told me that you'd warm me up inside
And serve me all the love I'd been denied
But warm and tender never was your style
So you served it cold
Without a smile
I loved you, yes I did, you know it's true
I praised you to the stars and to the moon
I did my very best the way you tested and you teased
      Check, please!

Check it and you'll find it to be true
That everything you give comes back to you
And when you're old and lonely and you hang your
     head to cry
Please check the mirror and you'll see the reason why
      Check, please!

I was trying to get a table at the restaurant of love
You asked me if I had a reservation
And when I told you, "Darlin', I been waitin' all my life"
You said, "Honey, won't you sit down in my station?"
My hunger made me leap before I looked
I shoulda gotten take-out, I got took
You made me stand in line behind the busboy and the cook and now I need
  A check, please!
