THE HEART IS A FRAGILE THING

Billy D. got drunk one night and threw his weight around
Broke into Regina's place and turned it upside down
Trashed his Plymouth Satellite headin' out of town
Then he walked to the railway station

Stood out on the platform, holdin' back some tears
Singin' some ol' cowboy song bout lonesome pioneers
No one had the nerve to tell him that train ain't run in years
And he just stood there til morning

But I guess you've heard the story
Of the ones who just fall down
With dreams that once were grand enough for kings
And you see em on the sidewalks
     Of all the larger towns
For the heart is a fragile thing

Riding on a Greyhound bus, Billy closed his eyes
Cuz you can't see the road ahead, just the road beside
You never know what's coming, til it's almost passed you by
But he heard he had an uncle in New Orleans

But I guess you've heard the story
Of the ones who just fall down
With dreams that once were grand enough for kings
And you see em on the sidewalks
     Of all the larger towns
For the heart is a fragile thing

Billy rang the bell
And he stared down at the floor
When the girl said, "Mr. Davidson don't live here anymore"
And he said, "You're really beautiful,"
Just as she closed the door
But anyway, just what was he thinking?

But I guess you've heard the story
Of the ones who just fall down
With dreams that once were grand enough for kings
Now you see em on the sidewalks
     Of all the larger towns
For the heart is a fragile thing
Oh, the heart is a fragile thing
